For the past couple of months I have been thinking about how we can record Supermarket Matters. Luckily I have had the help of two wonderful people when it comes to this: Mark Crowe-Groves and his friend Gabriel.
Gabriel is currently working on the Casimir Effect film.
Through a couple of discussions with these two I came to the conclusion that it would make sense to spend my savings on some decent equipment. Thus I am now in the posession of the following:
Two (soon to be three) Red 5 RV6 condenser mics:
These are complimented with a set of stands, some pop shields and, of course, some XLR cable to connect things up.
We also looked at the PV6 USB mixing desk:
This would allow us to connect up to four mics and output their signals as a single track via USB.
Unfortunately, after a day of trying the PV6 on a number of systems we found that it constantly produced a squeal across the vocal range. Just not good enough.
We returned the PV6 and found the Tascam US-800:
This monster can take in 6 XLR mics and will spit out a multi-track signal over USB. Perfect for what we need.
All in all, this set up can produce, after mastering, broadcast-quality audio. We have yet to try the Tascam but there will be a report when we have.
So, what do you think of our setup?
